Issue 25 : SEO (Search Engine Optimization)
![]() |
SEO is vital if you want to create a steady stream of traffic to your website, and it will definitely make a difference in the long run. There are only benefits to optimizing your page and it doesn’t cost anything! |
SEO is the Acronym for Search Engine Optimization which is actually the process of improving the quality of your traffic and achieving better results.
SEO was a marketing strategy developed to increase web site relevancy in search engines and today can be used to your advantage; assuming that you can optimize your web page precisely down to the very last letter! The way this works is that search engines like Google will send spider’s to crawl through the web every couple of weeks and they will gather new web pages by following links through others and will index your pages according to search algorithms.
SEO takes into account website coding, presentation/structure and content. I am going to explain briefly how you can hopefully maximize traffic by setting up your website properly.
1. Coding.
There are three simple parts to the coding of your website that a search engine will take into consideration when ranking your website. These are Title, Description and Meta tags.
a. Title.
This is easy, what is the title to your website? I find it funny that still I can browse and find websites with Untitled written at the top of their homepage. Whether through laziness, neglect or intelligence defiency you should always name your website or you will lose your chance to be seen by millions. Also when naming your website, be sure that it is relevant to your topic.
b. Description.
This is a little bit harder but still rather straight to the point. Give a brief; yet solid description of what your website is about and/or what it has to offer. Be sure to use a key word within your description to optimize search results. Don’t make the description too lengthy and don’t give useless information.
c. Meta Tags.
Meta Tags are a list of keywords that you will associate with your website. For example; if you have a cell phone review website then your keywords will look something like this: ( cell phone, cell, Nokia, Motorola, etc.) Keywords are very important when it comes to search engines because this is one of the most relevant ways to come across your website.
2. Presentation/Structure.
Search Engines put very little importance on web pages with little or no content. Presentation is actually more important to visitors once they’ve entered your website! If your page looks like it was made by a 5th grader then don’t count on anyone coming back unless you are offering them incentives to do so. On the other hand, sometimes you don’t want your page to look too professional because everyone knows that big companies like to take advantage of the normal consumer!
3. Content.
This is very important when it comes to Search Engine listing. If you have little or no content, then your website will be ranked very low in every sense. The more you have; the better. Think of it this way… if you are in direct competition with a website that has the exact same title/keywords as you but has 10 times the amount of content, who do you think will rank higher? Don’t act to rash, because if you have thousands of pages of garbage content then it won’t do you much good, because Quality is also an important factor. If you aren’t good at writing…there are many companies out there that you can hire someone to do the copy for your website and these are professionals who know exactly how to write for optimized Search Engine results!
One of the final things that will place your website at the top of the rankings is a high link popularity. You can achieve this by getting other websites to link to your homepage or directly to your content. You can do this many ways by offering an RSS feed of your content to others for free use, or you can trade links with other webmasters. Try to stay away from websites that have too many links because they can be considered link farms by search engines and your web page can be penalized by association to that site.
